Please meet Daniel, about 3 years ago after
a head injury Daniel started having grand mal seizures
Daniel had his first seizure of many in July 2002. From his first seizure
that was the result of a computer game to grand mal seizures some that are
induced by different lighting. Within two weeks of his first seizure his family
also find out that he has a very abnormal EEG and that he also detected a
heart arrhythmia and Daniel is put on meds to control his illness. Every
week for about three Months Daniel had endured a tonic clonic seizure
(grand mal) and then they changed to complex partials. During the next few
months his mom notes that Daniel is crying at everything and becoming
lethargic. He also started looking bloated and pale and began to gain alot
of weight. Since then life has been full of ups and downs and a lot of battles
trying to control his seizures, he now has many different types. He has been
on 6 different anti epileptic medications and a special diet and still continues
to have seizures.
Daniel like Tigger is a real fighter.
On February 1st Daniel had a VNS implanted to hopefully help control his
seizures. You see after having so many seizures the brain starts getting overloaded
and you start seeing all sorts of cognitive and neurological problems, like
slurred speech and memory loss and school which was once so easy is now very
difficult. Daniel is home schooled, so it gives us a chance to catch
up between doctors appointments. As of May Daniel's VNS implant was turned
off because it was making him worse, now he is on the last med and it does
seem to be helping. If this fails the only other option is brain surgery.
Any mothers worst nightmare.
Oct 2002, he had his last grand mal in the tub what a horrible experience,
pulling your child's stiff, convulsing wet body out of the tub.
(he is no longer allowed to take a bath alone)
