Please meet Haley

haley

D.O.B     April 10 1993

Haley is a ten and a half year old little girl who has a younger sister named Hanna.

In August 2003 Haley was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor (Nephroblastoma).  Up until that time she was a vibrant little girl full of energy that one day was sick and couldn’t shake the sickness.
Her parents thought nothing of it at first. Perhaps it was a persistent flu or cold with vomiting. When it lasted most of the summer her parents took her to the hospital to have her checked thoroughly. At first they thought her parents were crazy  and  they insisted an ultra sound be run but the hospital refused on that day. They took blood and ran tests on that and then the following week they were called back in for follow up.  When the hospital called to let them know of the news and that it wasnt good Haley's mom said "yes I know thats why we brought her in."
Patti and Kevin didnt realize just how bad it was until they were told that it was a large mass and had spread to other area's and that an appointment was set for Haley at the Children s Hospital.

They were totally floored when the doctors said she had a tumor. The first thing on their minds was the obvious question of where do we go from here, what do we do to get her better. Doctors did numerous scans and tests to best treat Haley. The tumor had grown to the size of a nerf football  and had engulfed  the right kidney completely, as well as to her lungs liver and the main artery to her heart. She started treatment in August 2003 and then in September she was diagnosed with Blood Clots. Then October 24 2003 the Cat scan showed the tumor was still growing despite the treatment that was prescribed.

They went on to new treatment which meant new medications and a new regime, for Haley. Then December 19 2003 her tumor stopped growing. Prayers were somewhat answered. This was excellent Christmas news for both Haley and her family. But she was now complaining of soreness and pain in her legs. Doctors checked her closely and found blood clots from the thrombosis in her legs. This illness is like a roller coaster ride, with ups and downs right turns and left so quickly that you don’t have time to compose yourself before the next curve.

Hailey continues to take meds and do chemo for the tumor. Her chemo is one week on and two weeks off. This exhausts her so much so that she isn’t able to go to school on a regular basis. Her dad Kevin stays home and takes care of her through the day.

Haley was at the doctors January 30th 2004 and test results showed that her white blood count is up considerably and she may be able to stop getting injections 3 times a day.

Doctors are looking into what is next.  Her parents Patti and Kevin hope that she has a  high enough white count to proceed with surgery and get the tumor removed completely. But until that’s confirmed they wait impatiently.

Haley has many interests. Mostly she enjoys watching her younger sister Hanna play basketball and playing with her.  She likes softball, basket ball, swimming and butterflies, stuffed animals, teddy bears and county music.

Please find it in your hearts to send Haley a quick hello in a card or small gift. She needs to know there are millions of people who care for her.

Thank you for your kindness and support.
